As-Saaffaat

Wal saffat saffan

By those who range themselves in ranks,

Falza faith Jerah faith te zar

And so are strong in repelling (evil),

Faltaliyati dhikra

And thus proclaim the Message (of Allah)!

Inna ilaahakum lava faith hed

Verily, verily, your Allah is one!-

Rabb As-samawa faith te Wal ardi vama baynahuma Wa rabbu Al-Mashāriqi

Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all between them, and Lord of every point at the rising of the sun!

zayna As-samaa Dunya Bezina Al-kawakib

We have indeed decked the lower heaven with beauty (in) the stars,-

min kulli Shaytaan Mārid

(For beauty) and for guard against all obstinate rebellious evil spirits,

la yassam'un ilaa Al malei Al A'la Wa yooqzafoon min kulli janib

(So) they should not strain their ears in the direction of the Exalted Assembly but be cast away from every side,

duhuran wa-la-hum azab wasibun

Repulsed, for they are under a perpetual penalty,

illa khatef Al-khaftah fa'atba'ahu Shahab thaqib

Except such as snatch away something by stealth, and they are pursued by a flaming fire, of piercing brightness.

Fastaftihim ahum a-shed-doo khalkan min Teen Lazibi

Just ask their opinion: are they the more difficult to create, or the (other) beings We have created? Them have We created out of a sticky clay!

ajibta vayaskharoon

Truly dost thou marvel, while they ridicule,

wa iza thukkirew yazkuroon

And, when they are admonished, pay no heed,-

wa iza ra'a Ayah yastaskhiroona

And, when they see a Sign, turn it to mockery,

illa seh-r mubeen

And say, "This is nothing but evident sorcery!

a-ee-tha Metna wa kunna turaban Waizama A inna lembe'oothoon

"What! when we die, and become dust and bones, shall we (then) be raised up (again)

Awaabaauna Al-awwalun

"And also our fathers of old?"

qul neam wa-antum da faith Kherun

Say thou: "Yea, and ye shall then be humiliated (on account of your evil)."

Fa-innama heya zajgrah and faith heda feidha hum yanzuroon

Then it will be a single (compelling) cry; and behold, they will begin to see!

wa kaaloo hatha yaum ad-Deen

They will say, "Ah! Woe to us! This is the Day of Judgment!"

hatha yaum Al-Fasli al-ladhee kuntum behi too-kath-thi-boon

(A voice will say,) "This is the Day of Sorting Out, whose truth ye (once) denied!"

ahshuroo Alladheena zalamu Vezua faith Jahum vama kanoo ya'bdoon

"Bring ye up", it shall be said, "The wrong-doers and their wives, and the things they worshipped-

min doo-neh Allah fahduhum ila seera faith te Al-jaheem

"Besides Allah, and lead them to the Way to the (Fierce) Fire!

Waqifuhum mas-ooloon

"But stop them, for they must be asked:

ma lakum tenasaroona

"'What is the matter with you that ye help not each other?'"

hum Al-yawma mustaslimoona

Nay, but that day they shall submit (to Judgment);

approached ba'sum Ala bas yatasaa'loona

And they will turn to one another, and question one another.

Qaloo ta'toonana ane Al-Yameen

They will say: "It was ye who used to come to us from the right hand (of power and authority)!"

bal Lam te kounua mu'minina

They will reply: "Nay, ye yourselves had no Faith!

vama kana lana min Sultan kavmen Tagina

"Nor had we any authority over you. Nay, it was ye who were a people in obstinate rebellion!

fahak alayna kawl Lazhaikoon

"So now has been proved true, against us, the word of our Lord that we shall indeed (have to) taste (the punishment of our sins).

Fa-aghwainakum kunna Gavina

"We led you astray: for truly we were ourselves astray."

Fa-in-nahum yawma'ithin fay Al-azabi mushtarikoona

Truly, that Day, they will (all) share in the Penalty.

kaza faith leka naf'alu Bil-mujrimeen

Verily that is how We shall deal with Sinners.

Innahum eeza Keela lahum La Ilah illa Allah yastakbiroona

For they, when they were told that there is no god except Allah, would puff themselves up with Pride,

Wayaquloon A een-na Lataarikoo alee-hetena Lesha'ir majnoon

And say: "What! shall we give up our gods for the sake of a Poet possessed?"

jaa bil-hakki wa saddaqa Al-mursaleen

Nay! he has come with the (very) Truth, and he confirms (the Message of) the messengers (before him).

Lazha-iku Al-azabi Al-ʾaleem

Ye shall indeed taste of the Grievous Penalty;-

vama tuj-owana illa ma ta'maLOON

But it will be no more than the retribution of (the Evil) that ye have wrought;-

illa ibada Allah Al-mukhlaseen

But the sincere (and devoted) Servants of Allah,-

ula-ika lahum rizk

For them is a Sustenance determined,

fawa faith kehu mukramoon

Fruits (Delights); and they (shall enjoy) honour and dignity,

fay Jannat An-Na'eem

In Gardens of Felicity,

Ala mutaqabilina

Facing each other on Thrones (of Dignity):

yoo-tah-foo bekas min Ma'eeni

Round will be passed to them a Cup from a clear-flowing fountain,

bayda lazzat Lil-shareebeen

Crystal-white, of a taste delicious to those who drink (thereof),

feeha ghawl hum anha yunzafuon

Free from headiness; nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom.

wa indahum kaasir faith t Al-Tarfi ain

And besides them will be chaste women, restraining their glances, with big eyes (of wonder and beauty).

ka'annahunna baydh

As if they were (delicate) eggs closely guarded.

faqbala ba'sum Ala bas yatasaa'loona

Then they will turn to one another and question one another.

kala Kail minhum Innee kana Lay Kareen

One of them will start the talk and say: "I had an intimate companion (on the earth),

yaqoolu a innak Lameno Al-Musaddiqīn

"Who used to say, 'what! art thou amongst those who bear witness to the Truth (of the Message)?

a-ee-tha Metna wa kunna turaban Waizama A inna Lamedinoon

"'When we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed receive rewards and punishments?'"

kala hel moottali'oona

(A voice) said: "Would ye like to look down?"

fatalla'a faraahu fay sawā Al-jaheem

He looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire.

kala Tallah in kedta leturdini

He said: "By Allah! thou wast little short of bringing me to perdition!

Nimah lakuntu mina Al-muhadhareen

"Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I should certainly have been among those brought (there)!

afama nahnu Bimayyiteena

"Is it (the case) that we shall not die,

illa mawtatena Al-oola vama nahnu bimu'aththabeena

"Except our first death, and that we shall not be punished?"

Inna hatha lah-hoo-wah Al-fawzu Al-Adheem

Verily this is the supreme achievement!

lemethil hatha fal-yamal Al-amiloona

For the like of this let all strive, who wish to strive.

atha faith leka khayr nuzulan am shajara Az-Zaqqoom

Is that the better entertainment or the Tree of Zaqqum?

Ja'alnaha fitna Lil-eth-thalimeen

For We have truly made it (as) a trial for the wrong-doers.

Innaha shajarah takh-rooj Asli Al-jaheem

For it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hell-Fire:

taluha ka'anna-hoo ruus Ash-shayateen

The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of devils:

Fa-in-nahum leakiloona minha Famaliun minha al-butoon

Truly they will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith.

thumma Inna lahum alayha Lashowban

Then on top of that they will be given a mixture made of boiling water.

thumma Inna merjee-uhum lalaj Al-jaheem

Then shall their return be to the (Blazing) Fire.

Innahum Al-fau abaaahum dhalleen

Truly they found their fathers on the wrong Path;

yehraun

So they (too) were rushed down on their footsteps!

Wa-lakd dalla kablehum akthar Al-awwaleen

And truly before them, many of the ancients went astray;-

Wa-lakd munzireen

But We sent aforetime, among them, (messengers) to admonish them;-

fanzur kayfa kana akeeba Al-munthireena

Then see what was the end of those who were admonished (but heeded not),-

illa ibada Allah Al-mukhlaseen

Except the sincere (and devoted) Servants of Allah.

Wa-lakd nadianá Noah Falani'ma Al-mujeeboon

(In the days of old), Noah cried to Us, and We are the best to hear prayer.

Wanajjaynaahu wa ahlah-hoo mina Al-karbi Al-Adheem

And We delivered him and his people from the Great Calamity,

Waja'alna Dhurriyyatahu hum Al-Baqeen

And made his progeny to endure (on this earth);

wa-tarakna alayhi fay Al-ākhirīna

And We left (this blessing) for him among generations to come in later times:

salaam Ala fay Al-aleemin

"Peace and salutation to Noah among the nations!"

kaza faith leka najzee Al-muhsinin

Thus indeed do we reward those who do right.

Innahu ibadina Al-mu'minin

For he was one of our believing Servants.

thumma Aghrakna Al-ākhirīna

Then the rest we overwhelmed in the Flood.

wa inna min sheeaaatihi Libra faith heyma

Verily among those who followed his Way was Abraham.

ith jaa Rabbahoo bekalb Saleem

Behold! he approached his Lord with a sound heart.

ith kala leiabiihii ta'boo-doon

Behold! he said to his father and to his people, "What is that which ye worship?

Ayifkan aleha doonan Allah tooreydown

"Is it a falsehood- gods other than Allah- that ye desire?

fama thanukkum berabbi Al-aleemin

"Then what is your idea about the Lord of the worlds?"

fanathara nazra fay An-nujoom

Then did he cast a glance at the Stars.

fakala Innee Sakeem

And he said, "I am indeed sick (at heart)!"

fatawallaw anhu mudbireena

So they turned away from him, and departed.

faraga alihatihim fakala ta'koolon

Then did he turn to their gods and said, "will ye not eat (of the offerings before you)?...

ma lakum tantiqoona

"What is the matter with you that ye speak not (intelligently)?"

faraga alayhim darban Bil-yameen

Then did he turn upon them, striking (them) with the right hand.

faqbaloo ilayhi yazefoona

Then came (the worshippers) with hurried steps, and faced (him).

kala a ta'budoon ma Tanhi-toona

He said: "Worship ye that which ye have (yourselves) carved?

Wallahu Khalaqakum vama ta'maLOON

"But Allah has created you and your handwork!"

ibnoo bunyan falkoohoo fay Al-jaheem

They said, "Build him a furnace, and throw him into the blazing fire!"

fa-a-ra-doo behi kayda Fa-ja-lna-hoom Al-asfaleen

(This failing), they then sought a stratagem against him, but We made them the ones most humiliated!

wa kala Innee thaahiboon ila Sayedin

He said: "I will go to my Lord! He will surely guide me!

Rabbi hab Lay mina As-saaliheen

"O my Lord! Grant me a righteous (son)!"

Fabashsharnahu Begulam haleem

So We gave him the good news of a boy ready to suffer and forbear.

falamā balağa As-sa'ya kala Ya bunayya Ara fay Al-manami azbahuk fanzur kala Ya Abati afal ma toomar satajiduni in shaa Allah mina As-sabireen

Then, when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, he said: "O my son! I see in vision that I offer thee in sacrifice: Now see what is thy view!" (The son) said: "O my father! Do as thou art commanded: thou will find me, if Allah so wills one practising Patience and Constancy!"

aslama Vetalluhu lil-jeb-ee-nee

So when they had both submitted their wills (to Allah), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice),

Wanadainahu an ya-ibra faith heymu

We called out to him "O Abraham!

Kad saddakta kaza faith leka najzee Al-muhsinin

"Thou hast already fulfilled the vision!" - thus indeed do We reward those who do right.

Inna hatha lah-hoo-wah Al-balaa Al-Mubeenu

For this was obviously a trial-

vafadajnāhu bizbhin azeem

And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice:

wa-tarakna alayhi fay Al-ākhirīna

And We left (this blessing) for him among generations (to come) in later times:

salaam Ibra faith heyma

"Peace and salutation to Abraham!"

kaza faith leka najzee Al-muhsinin

Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.

Innahu ibadina Al-mu'minin

For he was one of our believing Servants.

Wabasharnahu Isaac Nabiyyan min As-saaliheen

And We gave him the good news of Isaac - a prophet,- one of the Righteous.

Wabarakena alayhi Ishaq vamin Dhurriyyatihima muhsin Vezalim Linnafsihi

We blessed him and Isaac: but of their progeny are (some) that do right, and (some) that obviously do wrong, to their own souls.

Wa-lakd menenna Ala Vaharon

Again (of old) We bestowed Our favour on Moses and Aaron,

wanajjainahuma Wa kawhumaa mina Al-karbi Al-Adheem

And We delivered them and their people from (their) Great Calamity;

Wa nasarna-hum fakaanuu hum Al-Ghalibeen

And We helped them, so they overcame (their troubles);

Wa aatainaa humaa Al Kitaab Al-mustabeena

And We gave them the Book which helps to make things clear;

vahadaynāhumā As-Sira faith ta Al mustaqeem

And We guided them to the Straight Way.

wa-tarakna alayhimā fay Al-ākhirīna

And We left (this blessing) for them among generations (to come) in later times:

salaam Ala Vaharon

"Peace and salutation to Moses and Aaron!"

kaza faith leka najzee Al-muhsinin

Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.

Innahuma ibadina Al-mu'minin

For they were two of our believing Servants.

wa inna Ilyas Lameno Al-mursaleen

So also was Elias among those sent (by Us).

ith kala tattakoun

Behold, he said to his people, "Will ye not fear (Allah)?

ated'unon ba'l wata-tharooon Ahsan Al-Khāliqīna

"Will ye call upon Baal and forsake the Best of Creators,-

Allah Rabbukum Verabba Aabaikum Al-awwaleen

"Allah, your Lord and Cherisher and the Lord and Cherisher of your fathers of old?"

fakaththaboo-hoo Fa-in-nahum lamuhduroon

But they rejected him, and they will certainly be called up (for punishment),-

illa ibada Allah Al-mukhlaseen

Except the sincere and devoted Servants of Allah (among them).

wa-tarakna alayhi fay Al-ākhirīna

And We left (this blessing) for him among generations (to come) in later times:

salaam Il Yaseena

"Peace and salutation to such as Elias!"

kaza faith leka najzee Al-muhsinin

Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.

Innahu ibadina Al-mu'minin

For he was one of our believing Servants.

wa inna Loot lemina Al-mursaleen

So also was Lut among those sent (by Us).

ith Najjaināhu ajmein

Behold, We delivered him and his adherents, all

illa ajuzan fay Al-ghabireen

Except an old woman who was among those who lagged behind:

thumma damarna Al-ākhirīna

Then We destroyed the rest.

wa-innakum Letamurruna musbiheen

Verily, ye pass by their (sites), by day-

Vebellajil a-fa-laa ta'qiloona

And by night: will ye not understand?

wa inna Yunus Lameno Al-mursaleen

So also was Jonah among those sent (by Us).

ith abaka ilaa Al-fulk Al-Mashhoon

When he ran away (like a slave from captivity) to the ship (fully) laden,

fasaama fakana mina Al-mudhafina

He (agreed to) cast lots, and he was condemned:

Fal-tak-mah Al-hooth Wahuwah Muleym

Then the big Fish did swallow him, and he had done acts worthy of blame.

kana mina Al-musabbihin

Had it not been that he (repented and) glorified Allah,

lalabitha fay batnihi ila yaum yoo-ba-thoon

He would certainly have remained inside the Fish till the Day of Resurrection.

fanabizhnah Bil'ara Wahuwah Sakeem

But We cast him forth on the naked shore in a state of sickness,

wa anbatnaa alayhi min Yaq-teen

And We caused to grow, over him, a spreading plant of the gourd kind.

wa arsalnahu ila Mayateh Alf ow yazeedoon

And We sent him (on a mission) to a hundred thousand (men) or more.

fa-amanua fametnaahum ila

And they believed; so We permitted them to enjoy (their life) for a while.

Fastaftihim Al-rab-bika al-banah-too velahum al-ba-noon

Now ask them their opinion: Is it that thy Lord has (only) daughters, and they have sons?-

am khalaqna Al-Malaika eenath Wahum shahiduna

Or that We created the angels female, and they are witnesses (thereto)?

ala ifkihim laikuulaun

Is it not that they say, from their own invention,

walad Allah Wa innahum Lakazhiboon

"Allah has begotten children"? but they are liars!

astafa al-banat alay Al-ba-nee-na

Did He (then) choose daughters rather than sons?

ma lakum kayfa tah-koo-moon

What is the matter with you? How judge ye?

a-fa-laa tazakkaroona

Will ye not then receive admonition?

am lakum sultan mubeen

Or have ye an authority manifest?

fah-too Beketabikum in Sadiqina

Then bring ye your Book (of authority) if ye be truthful!

vadzhaluu bainahu vebaina al-jannah nasaban Wa-lakd alimeti Al-jinnah Innahum lamuhduroon

And they have invented a blood-relationship between Him and the Jinns: but the Jinns know (quite well) that they have indeed to appear (before his Judgment-Seat)!

Subhan Allah umma yasifoona

Glory to Allah! (He is free) from the things they ascribe (to Him)!

illa ibada Allah Al-mukhlaseen

Not (so do) the Servants of Allah, sincere and devoted.

Fa innakum vama ta'boo-doon

For, verily, neither ye nor those ye worship-

antum alayhi Befatinina

Can lead (any) into temptation concerning Allah,

illa hu saal Al-jaheem

Except such as are (themselves) going to the blazing Fire!

vama illa maqam

(Those ranged in ranks say): "Not one of us but has a place appointed;

wa-inna Lanehn As-saffoona

"And we are verily ranged in ranks (for service);

wa-inna Lanehn Al-musabbihuna

"And we are verily those who declare (Allah's) glory!"

Wa-in kanoo laikuulaun

And there were those who said,

Lau anna indana Zikra min Al-awwaleen

"If only we had had before us a Message from those of old,

lakunna ibada Allah Al-mukhlaseen

"We should certainly have been Servants of Allah, sincere (and devoted)!"

fakafaru fasof yaalamoona

But (now that the Qur'an has come), they reject it: But soon will they know!

Wa-lakd sabakat Kalimatuna lee-ba-de-na Al-mursaleen

Already has Our Word been passed before (this) to our Servants sent (by Us),

Innahum lahum Al-Mansuroon

That they would certainly be assisted,

wa inna Jundena lahum Al-Ghaliboon

And that Our forces,- they surely must conquer.

fetaŭella anhum hutta

So turn thou away from them for a little while,

waabsirhum fasof yubsiruna

And watch them (how they fare), and they soon shall see (how thou farest)!

Af bi-adhabina yasta'jiloona

Do they wish (indeed) to hurry on our Punishment?

feidha nezala besahetihim Fasaa sabah Al-munthireena

But when it descends into the open space before them, evil will be the morning for those who were warned (and heeded not)!

watawalla anhum hutta

So turn thou away from them for a little while,

absir fasof yubsiruna

And watch (how they fare) and they soon shall see (how thou farest)!

Subhan Rab-bik Rabbi Al-izzati umma yasifoona

Glory to thy Lord, the Lord of Honour and Power! (He is free) from what they ascribe (to Him)!

wasalamun alay Al-mursaleen

And Peace on the messengers!

Walhamdu Lil-lahi Rabbi Al-aleemin

And Praise to Allah, the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds.
