Bismi Allah Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem

    Wal-faj-ri

    By the break of Day

    walayālin ashr

    By the Nights twice five;

    Wash-shaf'i Al-Watr

    By the even and odd (contrasted);

    Wal-layli eeza yasri

And by the Night when it passeth away;-

hel fay dha faith leka kassem lizhee Hijr

Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand?

Alam Tara kayfa fala Rabbuka bi'ad

Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),-

    Iram zat Al-'imād

Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars,

    Al-latee lam yukh-lak mithluha fay Al-biladi

The like of which were not produced in (all) the land?

    thamuda Alladheena Jaboo As-sakhra bil-vadi

And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?-

    Pharaoh zee Al awtad

And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes?

    Alladheena Tagau fay Al-biladi

(All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands,

    Fa'athru feeha Al-fasada

And heaped therein mischief (on mischief).

    fasabb alayhim Rabbuka saut azabin

Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements:

    Inna Rabbak Labil-mirsadi

For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower.

fa-amma Al-insan eeza ma ibtalayuhu Rabbuhu Fa'akramahu Wa na'amahu fayaqoolu Rabbi akramani

Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me."

eeza ma ibtalayuhu fakadara alayhi Rizqahu fayaqoolu Rabbi ahane

But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!"

    Kalla bal la too-kree-moon al-yateema

Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans!

    tahaddun Ala taami Al-Miskeen

Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!-

    wa-ta-koo-loon at-turātha aklan Lamma

And ye devour inheritance - all with greed,

    waa too-hee-boo-naa Al-mal hubban jam

And ye love wealth with inordinate love!

    eeza dokte Al-ard dakka dakka

Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder,

wajaa Rabbuka Wal malak saffan saffan

And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank,

    Vezhaya Yawmiz Bijehennem yawma'ithin yatazakkaru Al-insan wa-annaa Lahoo Adh-Dhikra

And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him?

yaqoolu Yal-yetani qadamtu leh hah yah tee

He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!"

    fayawmeez la yu'azzibu azabahu Ahad

For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict,

    yoo-thi-koo wasaka Ahad

And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind.

    Ya ayyatoha an-nafsu Al-mutmainnah

(To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction!

    Erjee ila Rabbik Raziyah mardiyyah

"Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him!

    fazhooli fay ee-baa-dee

"Enter thou, then, among My devotees!

    vadhuli Jannati

    "Yea, enter thou My Heaven!
