Al-Wāqiʿah

eeza waqati Al-Waqi'ah

When the Event inevitable cometh to pass,

laysa leva'atiha katheebah

Then will no (soul) entertain falsehood concerning its coming.

khafidhah Rafia

(Many) will it bring low; (many) will it exalt;

eeza roozhet Al-ard rejjan

When the earth shall be shaken to its depths,

vabust Al-jibaalu bassan

And the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms,

fakanat habaa munbathā

Becoming dust scattered abroad,

wa kuntum azwa faith ja thalatha

And ye shall be sorted out into three classes.

fa'ashab Al-Maimana Ashabu Al-Maimana

Then (there will be) the Companions of the Right Hand;- What will be the Companions of the Right Hand?

Wa ashaab Al-Mash'amati Ashabu Al-Mash'amati

And the Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand?

walsaabikuun As-sabiqoon

And those Foremost (in Faith) will be Foremost (in the Hereafter).

ula-ika Al-muqarrabun

These will be those Nearest to Allah:

fay Jannat An-Na'eem

In Gardens of Bliss:

thullah min Al-awwaleen

A number of people from those of old,

Wakeel min Al-ākhirīna

And a few from those of later times.

Ala mauzoonah

(They will be) on Thrones encrusted (with gold and precious stones),

muttakeena alayha mutaqabilina

Reclining on them, facing each other.

jatuufu alayhim weld faith nã mukhalladun

Round about them will (serve) youths of perpetual (freshness),

beakwabin wa a-ba-ree-ka Wakas min Ma'een

With goblets, (shining) beakers, and cups (filled) out of clear-flowing fountains:

la yoo-sed-ah-oon anha yun-ze-foon

No after-ache will they receive therefrom, nor will they suffer intoxication:

mimma yata khaiyaroone

And with fruits, any that they may select:

velahmi tair mimma yashtuuna

And the flesh of fowls, any that they may desire.

Wahoor ain

And (there will be) Companions with beautiful, big, and lustrous eyes,-

ka amthal Allului Al-Maknūn

Like unto Pearls well-guarded.

jaza bima kanoo ya'maloon

A Reward for the deeds of their past (life).

yasma'oon feeha lagwa ta'theeman

Not frivolity will they hear therein, nor any taint of ill,-

illa Keela salaam salaam

Only the saying, "Peace! Peace".

Wa ashaab Al-Yameen Ashabu Al-Yameen

The Companions of the Right Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Right Hand?

fay sedr mahud

(They will be) among Lote-trees without thorns,

Watalh manzood

Among Talh trees with flowers (or fruits) piled one above another,-

Vazeel Mamdood

In shade long-extended,

wama maskoob

By water flowing constantly,

katheera

And fruit in abundance.

la mak-too-ah mamnooah

Whose season is not limited, nor (supply) forbidden,

vafuroosh marfoo-ah

And on Thrones (of Dignity), raised high.

Inna Ansha'nahunna Insha

We have created (their Companions) of special creation.

fajalnaahunna abkaran

And made them virgin - pure (and undefiled), -

uruban atraben

Beloved (by nature), equal in age,-

Leas-habi Al-Yameen

For the Companions of the Right Hand.

thullah min Al-awwaleen

A (goodly) number from those of old,

wasullah min Al-ākhirīna

And a (goodly) number from those of later times.

Wa ashaab Ash-Shimali Ashabu Ash-Shimali

The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand?

fay samooum Wah-heem

(They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water,

Vazeel min yah-moom

And in the shades of Black Smoke:

la barid Kareem

Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please:

Innahum kanoo qibla dha faith leka mutrafina

For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury),

waa kanoo yoo-srroo-na alay Al-Hinthi Al-Adheem

And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme!

waa kanoo yaquloon a-ee-tha Metna wa kunna turaban Waizama A inna lembe'oothoon

And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?-

Awaabaauna Al-awwalun

"(We) and our fathers of old?"

qul Inna Al-awwaleen Wal aakhirina

Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times,

lamajmu'uun ila meykat yaum ma'loom

"All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known.

thumma ayyuhā Adh-dhaalloona Al-mukaththiboon

"Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!-

leakiloona min shajar min Zaqqoom

"Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum.

Famaliun minha al-butoon

"Then will ye fill your insides therewith,

feshareboon alayhi mina Al-Hameem

"And drink Boiling Water on top of it:

feshareboon Shurb Al-Heem

"Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!"

hatha nuzuluhum yaum ad-Deen

Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital!

nahnu khalaqnakum Falolla too-seddi-koo-on

It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth?

Afara'aytum maa temnun

Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,-

a-antum takhlookoonahoo am nahnu Al-khaliqoon

Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators?

nahnu kadarna byenkum Al maut vama nahnu bimasbookeena

We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated

an noobeddila amsalakum Venunshiekum fay ma ta'lamoona

from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not.

Wa-lakd alimtumu An-nash'ah Al-oola Falolla tazakkaroona

And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises?

Afara'aytum maa tah-roo-thoon

See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground?

a-antum tazra'unuhu am nahnu Al-zha faith ree-oon

Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause?

Lau nesha lajal'nahu fazaltum tafakkuhun

Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment,

lamughramoon

(Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing):

nahnu mahroomoon

"Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)"

Afara'aytum Al-maa al-ladhee Tashrabuna

See ye the water which ye drink?

a-antum unzaltumoo-hoo mina Al-Muzni am nahnu Al-munziloon

Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We?

Lau nesha Ja'alnaah ujaj Falolla tashkuroon

Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks?

Afara'aytum An-nar Al-latee toh-roon

See ye the Fire which ye kindle?

a-antum ansha'tum shajarataha am nahnu Al-Munshi'ūn

Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it?

nahnu Ja'alnaha vamataan Lil-muqweeneen

We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts.

fasabbih besmi Rab-bik Al-Adheem

Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme!

Uqsimu bimova faith kye An-nujoom

Furthermore I call to witness the setting of the Stars,-

Wa innahu Lakasamun lau ta'lamoona azeem

And that is indeed a mighty adjuration if ye but knew,-

Innahu laqur-anun

That this is indeed a qur'an Most Honourable,

fay makunun

In Book well-guarded,

la yamussuhu illa Al-mutahharoon

Which none shall touch but those who are clean:

Tanzil min Rabbee Al-aleemin

A Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.

A fa bi haza mudhinun

Is it such a Message that ye would hold in light esteem?

Wa taj'aloona rizkakum anakum too-kath-thi-boon

And have ye made it your livelihood that ye should declare it false?

eeza balaghati Al-hulkum

Then why do ye not (intervene) when (the soul of the dying man) reaches the throat,-

wa-antum heeneez tenzuroona

And ye the while (sit) looking on,-

Wa nahnu akrabu ilayhi minkum velakin la tubsirun

But We are nearer to him than ye, and yet see not,-

in Ghaira Medinina

Then why do ye not,- If you are exempt from (future) account,-

tar-jee-oo-nah-ha in Sadiqina

Call back the soul, if ye are true (in the claim of independence)?

in kana mina Al-muqarrabīna

Thus, then, if he be of those Nearest to Allah,

Faruh Waraehan Wa jannatu Na'eem

(There is for him) Rest and Satisfaction, and a Garden of Delights.

in kana Ashabi Al-Yameen

And if he be of the Companions of the Right Hand,

feselaam laka Ashabi Al-Yameen

(For him is the salutation), "Peace be unto thee", from the Companions of the Right Hand.

in kana mina Al-mukaththibeen Adh-dhaalleen

And if he be of those who treat (Truth) as Falsehood, who go wrong,

fanuzul

For him is Entertainment with Boiling Water.

Wa tasliyatu Jaheem

And burning in Hell-Fire.

Inna hatha lah-hoo-wah Haqqu Al-Yaqīni

Verily, this is the Very Truth and Certainly.

fasabbih besmi Rab-bik Al-Adheem

So celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme.
